Standing at 5,895 meters, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa—and one of the most iconic trekking experiences in the world.
For those looking for a shorter, more comfortable path to the summit, the Marangu Route offers the perfect balance of adventure, natural beauty, and accessible challenge.
Known as the “Coca-Cola Route”, Marangu is the only trail with permanent mountain huts for overnight stays—making it ideal for trekkers who prefer not to camp. Over five incredible days, you’ll hike through diverse landscapes, from tropical rainforest to glacial summit, and experience the thrill of reaching Uhuru Peak, where the world lies beneath your feet.

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Your trek begins at the Marangu Gate after registration. The trail passes through lush rainforest, home to blue monkeys and many bird species. The path is well-developed and gently ascends to Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop. You can take a short walk to Maundi Crater for views of Kenya’s Amboseli Plains if time and energy permit. This day is relatively easy and helps you ease into the trek.
Mandara Huts to Horombo Huts (3,720m)
Today you leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone, a scenic and open landscape with giant lobelias and heathers. The trail ascends steadily, with occasional views of Mawenzi Peak (Kilimanjaro's second highest peak). You may begin to feel the effects of altitude today. You’ll arrive at Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend the night. This is one of the most picturesque parts of the route with wide views across the saddle and toward Kibo Peak.
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
The trail continues into the alpine desert zone as you cross the "Saddle"—a barren, windswept area between the volcanic peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. The oxygen levels decrease significantly here, and hikers must pace themselves carefully. After a long but gradual climb, you reach Kibo Hut, your base camp for the summit attempt. You’ll eat an early dinner and try to sleep by early evening, as summit day begins around midnight.
Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then descend to Horombo Hut
Summit day starts around midnight with a slow and steady climb by headlamp to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. From there, you continue along the snowy rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The sunrise from the summit is breathtaking. After taking photos and a short rest, you begin the descent back to Kibo Hut, rest briefly, then continue descending to Horombo Hut. This is the longest and most exhausting day of the trek, testing your endurance and willpower.
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Your final day is a steady descent through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. The drop in altitude makes breathing easier, and you can enjoy the lush surroundings once again. At the gate, you’ll sign out and receive your certificate of achievement—green for Gilman’s Point and gold for Uhuru Peak. From there, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel to celebrate your successful climb and recover.
